English Language A Level at St Vincent College

Course description

We investigate the many varieties of English and the ways in which both spoken and written language can affect us as language users. If you enjoy finding out about the role and power of language, the way in which it varies and changes due to a number of different factors and the importance of basic grammar to our understanding of human experience, then this is the course for you.

Course content

AS Level

Component 1 – Language Context and Identity (Exam)

Students explore how context and reception affect language choices and how writers/speakers present themselves to audiences.
(50% of the course)

Component 2 – Child Language (Exam)

Students explore theories surrounding how children learn how to speak and write.
(50% of the course)

A Level

Component 1 – Language Variation (Exam)

How language varies depending on factors such as audience and the historical period it was produced in.
(35% of the course)

Component 2 – Child Language (Exam)

Students explore theories surrounding how children learn to speak and write.
(20% of the course)

Component 3 – Investigating Language (Exam)

Own investigation carried out from a choice of five topics that will be supported by pre-release material:
• Global English
• Language and Gender Identity
• Language and Journalism
• Language and Power
• Regional Language Variation
(25% of the course)

Component 4 – Crafting Language (Exam)

Students select a genre and produce two original creative pieces that are differentiated by function and/or audience.
(20% of the course)

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs grade A* – C which MUST include English Language AND English Literature
