Economics AS/A level at Hatch End High School
Course description
This course would suit anyone with an interest in commerce and industry or simply with a desire to understand how an economy runs.
Course content
You will develop an understanding of economic concepts and theories through consideration of current economic issues, problems and institutions that affect everyday life. You will learn how to apply economic concepts and theories in a range of contexts and to appreciate their value and limitations in explaining real-world phenomena. You will also be taught how to analyse, explain and evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of the market economy, the role of government within it and how to participate effectively in society as a citizen, producer and consumer.
How will I be taught?
Lectures, class discussions, group activities, case studies, independent research and past paper exam practice questions.
Entry requirements
6 GCSE grades A*-C/9-5 to include Maths & English Language (C+/5+).
Assessment
AS
Two units (Theme 1 and Theme 2) are assessed by written examinations of one hour and 30 minutes each.
A level
Four units (Theme1-4) are assessed by three written examinations of two hours each

Economics provides an excellent foundation for professional careers and higher education courses in business, finance, banking, accountancy, law, insurance, marketing, personnel and management.
