Course description

Why study English?

The course is designed to encourage students to develop and enjoyment and appreciation of fiction and non-fiction texts. It will appeal to students who enjoy reading, discussing ideas and leaning about the structure of the English Language.

Course content

Exam Board: AQA

AS Units:

ELLB1: Exam - Introduction to Language and Literature

ELLB2: Coursework - Catcher in the Rye and Huckleberry Finn

A2 Units:

ELLB3: Exam - The Crucible

ELLB4: Coursework - Text Transformations.

Entry requirements

Minimum of 5 GCSEs A*-C in addition to a A strong C or above at GCSE English. You must be an enthusiastic reader and be able to express your ideas clearly and fluently.


Introduction to Language and Literature Study—EXAM—60% of AS, 30% of A Level

Themes in Language and Literature—COURSEWORK—40% of AS, 20% of A2.

Talk in Life and Literature—EXAM—30% of A Level.

Text Transformation—COURSEWORK—20% of A Level



Future opportunities

Students with AS and A2 English Literature and Language have an extensive range of possible careers and higher education opportunities. Students will learn to use a wide variety of transferable skills. These include writing for an audience and purpose, presenting ideas to the group, independent research and analysing and evaluating written and spoken texts. These are skills that are in demand from employers and universities, especially in todays media driven society, as well as being valuable in their own right. Many students who go on to study at University take up English studies or combine it with history, law, philosophy, politics or language.

Opportunities also exist for students to use their qualification to go straight into employment such as journalism, law or the media. This may also include the chance to receive further training.
