Maths A Level at New College Nottingham

Course description

If you have a talent for maths and enjoy solving challenging problems, this could be the course for you.  It’s a subject where you’ll gain some great transferable skills such as problem solving, logic and analysing situations, which are useful for many university courses and careers.

Having a traditional subject such as Maths on your CV can boost your job prospects and there is evidence that people who study Maths earn more money than those who don’t.

Course content

Many of our students take this subject alongside business studies, economics, psychology, sociology and geography. As part of the course you will study pure mathematics, building on the work you did at GCSE level and extending your range of mathematical skills and techniques to solve more difficult problems. Topics include: pure maths and statistics.  You will need your own scientific calculator. A graphical calculator is also strongly recommended – ask your tutor for advice before buying one.

Entry requirements

You’ll need 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C including English Language and at least grade B in maths. You may also be required to attend an introductory bridging course after completion of your GCSEs

Future opportunities

You could progress to a related higher education course such as maths, business, accountancy, science, computing, engineering or economics.

Key information

  • More information
    • The original High Pavement Grammar School was established in 1788 and it wasn't until 1975 that it turned from grammar school into a sixth form centre. In 1999 the centre merged with New College Nottingham and since then has occupied a prime position on the edge of Nottingham Trent University's City campus, giving our A Level students a real insight into University life, before they've even got there.

High Pavement is home to ncn's A Level courses and with 30 or so to choose from, our students have variety and choice, as well as great on site facilities, fantastic tutors and amazing opportunities during their time with us. Overseas trips, one-to-one support with UCAS personal statements and guest speakers from the UK's top Universities are the norm here at High Pavement and that's why our students tell us time and time again that coming to High Pavement has opened their mind to opportunities and experiences they never knew existed.
