Course content

Topic 1: Physical Chemistry: Atomic Structure and Bonding

Topic 2: Inorganic Chemistry: The alkaline earth metals (group 2) and halogens (group 7) of the periodic table

Topic 3: Organic Chemistry: The structure and properties of alkanes, alkenes and alcohols

Topic 4: Physical Chemistry: Thermodynamics, rate equations and acids and bases

Topic 5: Inorganic Chemistry: Transition metals and the reactions of ions in aqueous solution

Topic 6: Organic Chemistry: Polymers, aldehydes, ketones and carboxylic acids

Entry requirements

5A*-C/9-5GCSE grades. Students must also achieve at least B grades in Core Science and Additional Science or GCSE Chemistry, and at least a grade 6 in GCSE Mathematics.

Assessment

Paper 1 May/June: 35% of total A Level

Paper 2 May/June: 35% of total A Level

Paper 3 May/June: 30% of the total A level

Practical skill development through 12 compulsory experiments
