Animal Care - Level 2 at Askham Bryan College

Course description

Learn about animal care and develop the skills you need to care for and handle a variety of animals. There are lectures, talks from guest speakers, visits, practical sessions in the animal unit and work experience. Actual themes studied may differ and depend on the study centre.

Course content

  • General Animal Care Pathway

Course Themes*: • Plan and monitor animal feeding and accommodation • Maintain animal health and welfare • Animal handling • Breeds and grooming • Principles of animal biology • Care of exotics • English and maths

York Campus:

The Level 2 Diploma in Animal Care at York allows learners to either select a specialist  pathway.

  • Zoo and Wildlife


Companion Pathway:

This study programme has an emphasis placed upon companion (pet) type of animals.


Zooand Wildlife Pathway:

Includes animal care across a variety of animals, but also extends to studying and experiences with zoological animals and large animals.


Entry requirements

Level 2 Study Programmes:

4 GCSEs at grade 3 (old GCSE grade D) or above to include 2 from English, Maths and Science with at least a grade 2 (old GCSE grade E) in the remaining subject. Alternatively a suitable Level 1 vocational qualification with English and Maths at Level 1



Your timetable will include a mixture of practical work and classroom (theory) sessions. Vocational programmes are normally assessed through a variation of programme assignments, practical assessment and formal time constrained assessments/examinations.
