AS/A-Level Music Technology at Leeds City College

Course description

The Music Technology A-Level course provides you with a grounding in both the theory and history of music technology and its practical application through a range of coursework-based tasks, which will develop skills including sequencing, recording, composing, analysing, producing and technological development.  You will be taught by specialist music technologists in purpose built facilities.

On this course, you will develop the ability to use sequencing and recording software to create ideas, capture audio, and produce finished mixes.  You will improve your aural skills and knowledge of musical theory through listening and analysis.

Course content

AS Level

Unit 1: Music Technology Portfolio 1 (Sequencing & Recording)

You will gain the ability to use sequencing software to develop a skeleton score into a fully developed arrangement. You will learn about capturing, processing and mixing music using microphones, mixers and software.

Unit 2: Listening & Analysing You will study Popular Music Styles since 1910 and understand the Principles and Practice of Music Technology as it relates to the development of music over this time


Unit 3:Music Technology Portfolio 2

Building on study at AS level you use sequencing software, multi-track recording equipment and compositional techniques to produce an audio CD containing 3 tracks. You will learn about capturing, processing and mixing music using microphones, mixers and software.

Unit 4: Analysing and Producing

Students will be expected to demonstrate their knowledge of music and the principles of music technology through a series of written commentaries, manipulations and production tasks using material provided on an examination paper and recorded on an audio CD.

Entry requirements

The general requirements for direct entry to our 2 year A-Level programmes are 5 GCSEs including English and Maths at grade A*-C or equivalent, plus 2 additional GCSEs or BTECs at grade A*-C or the equivalent.

For students applying with new 1-9 grade tier GCSE qualifications in Maths or English, we will consider a grade 4 as equivalent to grade C in terms of our general entry requirements for September 2017 entry. However please be aware that specific subjects may require grade 5 or above in GCSE English or Maths.

Applicants with 5 GCSEs at grade A*-C including English and Maths, but without the 2 additional A*-C equivalent qualifications may be considered, dependent on individual circumstances, at the discretion of the Deputy Head or Head of A-Levels.

Students with a GCSE average score of below 5.7 (mostly Cs at GCSE) will follow the 3 A-Level programme, whilst students with a GCSE average score of 5.7 (mostly B and above at GCSE) or above are encouraged to study 4 A-Level subjects. Our expert staff will help you to work out your expected average GCSE score for guidance.

In addition to our general entry criteria, some subjects have their own additional criteria.

Unit 1: Music Technology Portfolio 1 Production of a CD and logbook under controlled conditions

Unit 2: Listening & Analysing 1hr 45min externally assessed exam which involves listening to excerpts of audio and music

Unit 3: Music Technology Portfolio 2 Production of a CD and logbook under controlled conditions

Unit 4: Analysing and Producing 2 hour exam which involves listening, audio editing, mixing and written analysis

Future opportunities

The A-Level Music Technology course provides an excellent basis for many opportunities in higher education, and many career possibilities for those proficient in handling music technology.  An A-Level in Music Technology will continue to provide valuable experience and preparation for students aiming for further study in the subject.  It could lead to careers in the record industry, sound engineering, record producing, and music education.
