Course description

AS: A one year course normally taken in year 12.

Topics covered include:

Unit 1: Causes of disease; enzymes and the digestive system; cells and movement of molecules; lungs and lung disease; the heart and heart disease; immunity.

Unit 2: Variation; DNA and meiosis; genetic diversity; the variety of life; the cell cycle; cellular organisation; exchange and transport; classification; adaptation and selection; biodiversity

Unit 3: How science works – Investigative Skills Analysis (ISA)

A2: A one year course normally taken in year 13.

Topics covered include:

Unit 4: The environment and human impacts; photosynthesis; sustainability; ecology fieldwork; statistics.

Unit 5: Nervous and hormonal control; genetic control mechanisms; DNA technology in the diagnosis and treatment of human diseases.

Unit 6: How science works – Investigative Skills Analysis (ISA).

Either a B grade in GCSE Science and a B grade in the Biology component of GCSE Additional Science or a B grade in GCSE Biology.
