Electrical Installation Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3 at Bedford College

Course description

The electrotechnical industry involves the installation, maintenance and repair of electrotechnical equipment. This course offers the underpinning knowledge and on site assessment package that will give you “Fully qualified Electrical Contractor” status. With the right qualifications and experience electricians can progress to supervisory or management roles, become self employed or set up their own contracting business.

Course content

This course offers learners both practical and theoretical insights into the electrotechnical field. The practical aspect is covered by carrying various types of electrical installations initially on boards, progressing onto real size as your ability increases, whilst the theoretical side is covered in classroom environment There is approximately a 50% split between theory and practical activities.

As part of the PEO Level 2 course learners will study the following areas:

  • Working Effectively and Safely in an Electrotechnical Environment
  • Principles of Electrotechnology
  • Application of Health and Safety and Electrical Principles
  • Installation practices and theory
  • Functional Skills in English, ICT and Maths.

Entry requirements

You need three GCSEs at grade C or above in English, Math’s and Science. You will need to have good numeracy and literacy skills along with an interest in Electrical / Electronic Engineering. If you are over 19, you may gain entry to the course subject to a successful interview and Online assessment. You must have employment within the Electrotechnical sector.


80% written question papers and assignments. 10% practical competence assessments. 10% GOLA.

Future opportunities

You can progress on to a number of recognised Electrical Installation courses including C&G 2391 Inspection and test and the new green technologies courses such as Wind and Photo voltaic power generation installations.
