Laboratory Technician (Level 3) Advanced Apprenticeship at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This apprenticeship is designed for trainee Laboratory and Science Technicians who carry out laboratory testing and perform a variety of technical support functions to help Scientists and other Technicians. It will enable the individual to develop the knowledge and skills needed in this area of work. It is also suitable for Technicians in an educational role e.g. school or college. You will attend College one day a week.

Course content

  • NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Activities Level 3: four mandatory units and further optional units relevant to your specific job role
  • BTEC Diploma in Applied Science Level 3: six mandatory units plus seven optional units
  • Functional Skills Level 2 in English, Maths and ICT

English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs A* to C or equivalent including English, Maths and Science. You must obtain an Apprenticeship job in a relevant role.


NVQ Diploma in Laboratory and Associated Technical Skills is via continuous assessment in your workplace. Assessment includes BTEC assignments throughout the course. Your Functional skills are assessed through a written examination.

Future opportunities

HNC/HND in either Applied Chemistry or Applied Biology.

Science Technician Higher Apprenticeship.

Further information

Apprentices will be employed for a minimum of 30 hours. Contracted hours include a day release to College with the rest of the week in the workplace.
