Sports Academy at Helston Community College
Is This Course For Me?
You enjoy sport and PE. You are keen to develop your performance individually or as part of a team. You would like to take part in competition in your sport against local colleges and on a sports tour. You are keen to develop your leadership and coaching skills.
There are two parts to the course. Through both years, students train in their chosen sport twice a week with a qualified coach and compete in College fixtures. There is fitness development and a personal training programme and our own training facility which students can use throughout the College week. Video analysis is used to enhance performance. In addition, students can complete the Level 2 Sports Leader Award. Students will be taught how to communicate effectively and organise safe, fun activity sessions for various groups. The SLA Level 2 involves a minimum of 10 hours experience leading local pupils in sports activities. Our students then have the opportunity to take coaching courses in their chosen sports.
There are no specific qualifications needed to access this course just an enthusiasm for sport.
This is a practical course with a minimum of written work. Students will have a file for the duration of the course. The Level 2 Sports Leadership Award has a log book to complete and there will be session planning and evaluation as part of those courses. Students are assessed during their leadership on their ability to run safe, active and enjoyable sports sessions.
Careers in education and teaching, sports coaching and personal training, the leisure industry and local leisure centres, the armed forces and the police, fire brigade and lifeguard service would all value these awards extremely highly. Once students have qualified as a level 2 Sports Leader They can take the Higher Sports Leadership Award. With a level 1 coaching badge they can work as a sports coach and activities scheme leader – an excellent source of part time work during the years of study! The Sports Leadership Awards are extremely well valued by Universities and Employers alike as it shows that the individual is committed and can work effectively in teams and has the essential personal skills of good communication and organisation. Students will have the knowledge to keep fit for life and the personal skill level to progress into senior teams in their sport.
