English Literature at The Joseph Rowntree School

Course description

AS Units:

Unit 1: LITB1 (Aspects of Narrative) - For this module you will study four texts - two novels and two sets of poetry. The module is assessed by a two hour examination. You will be required to spend an hour writing about one of the texts in detail and an hour writing about the remaining three texts together. This is an open book examination.

Unit 2: LITB2 (Dramatic genres - Comedy) - For this module you will study two plays - a Shakespeare play and a modern tragedy. The module is assessed through coursework: you will be required to submit an essay of 1200-1500 words on each text.

A2 Units:

Unit 3: LITB3 (Texts and Genres - Elements of the Gothic/Pastoral) - For this module you will study three texts of the same genre. The module is assessed by a two hour examination. You will be required to spend an hour writing about one of the texts in detail and an hour writing about the three texts together. This is a closed book examination.

Unit 4: LITB4 (Further and Independent Reading) - For this module you will study a range of texts, of your own or your teacher’s choice. The module is assessed through two pieces of coursework:
* For the first piece you will consider a range of critical approaches to literature and apply these to a text or texts of your choice. This piece should be 1200-1500 words.
* The second piece will be a comparison of two substantial texts and should be 1500-2000 words.

Entry requirements

To be successful at A-Level, students need to achieve an average points score of 38, which is broadly equivalent to 5 GCSE grades A*-C

Grade C in English Language and English Literature at GCSE.
