English Language AS and A Level at Ripley St Thomas CE Academy

Course description

As a student of English Language you will come to realise that every word we say or write is a choice. You will learn new ways to analyse those choices as well as developing your own creative writing and research skills.

Course content

You will begin two courses in September: a one year AS level and a two year A level. The two courses are co-teachable because what you learn in preparation for the AS examinations can also be used in the A level examinations at the  end of Year 13.

Year 12
We will prepare you to take the AS qualification in the third term. You will sit two 90 minute examinations which are each worth 50% of the AS grade. There is no coursework element at AS level. If you decide not to continue with the subject in Year 13 you will still have an  AS qualification and grade.

Year 13
If you do decide to continue with the subject we will spend the year working on coursework (20%) and preparing you for two 150 minute exams, each worth 40% of your A level grade.

Entry requirements

GCSE English Grade B.

20% of your marks will come from coursework. You will produce some original writing and then explain the decisions you made as a writer. You could write a story, an article for a magazine or newspaper, a speech, a script or anything else that could be produced by a professional writer. You will also carry out an original piece of language research.
