Music AS/A Level at Boston High School

Course description

The course aims to provide a  broad and coherent study of music which allows you to pursue your own musical inter‐ ests. You will develop skills in the three distinct but related disciplines of Performing, Composing and Listening and Ap‐ praising whilst having the flexibility to specialise in either performing or composing by apportioning 10% of the assess‐ ment to one of these areas as an in‐depth study. You will develop your knowledge, understanding and skills in analys‐ ing and listening to music from both the classical (including a particular study of the symphony and modern 20th cen‐ tury styles) and popular music genres (choosing from pop, jazz or musical theatre).  

The course is ideal both for students who wish to simply broaden their skills and understanding of all aspects of music as well as for those who are interested in pursing a career as a performer or in music theatre or developing their skills beyond A level to degree standard at University or at a specialist conservatoire.

Entry requirements

You need  ...  

- A minimum of a level B at GCSE

- OR Distinction at BTEC

- OR Grade 5 Theory plus ability to play an instrument /voice to a minimum standard of grade 4, working towards grade 5.

Assessment

All assessment takes place in Year 13  

Option A—35% Performing, 25% Composing  OR  Option B—25% Performing, 35% Composing  

AND

Unit 3—40% Listening and Appraising in a   2 hrs. 15 min   exam at the end of the course
