Plumbing Studies Level 2 Diploma at Shooters Hill Sixth Form College

Course description

The course is designed for those people interested in a career in the Construction industry particularly related to Plumbing and who wishes to progress into an apprenticeship or further study.

You may progress onto the BTEC National in Construction at the Shooters Hill Campus. This will enable progression to University or employment at technician level. Alternatively you may enter employment into the industry as an apprentice at Level 3 and/or return to study further professional or trade qualifications on a part time basis.

Course content

The course comprises of a number subject specific units to be completed over a one year period and have both practical and theory assessments; the subject areas are; 201 Health and safety in building services engineering, 202 Electrical principles and processes for building services engineering, 203 Scientific principles for domestic, industrial and commercial plumbing, 204 Common plumbing processes, 205 Cold water systems, Domestic hot water systems, 207 Sanitation, 208 Central heating systems, 209 Drainage and 210 Understand how to communicate with others within the building industry.

Assessment is by a mixture of online test and practical assignments.

The programme is 20 hours per week for 38 weeks. In addition to these subjects students will study English either at GCSE or iGCSE. They will also study Maths. Please note that students who come in with a Maths or English GCSE grade at C or above will not be placed on a programme.

Entry requirements

4 GCSEs at grades A*-D. (Minimum D grades in Maths & English) or Level 1 qualification in Construction with Key Skills at Level 1 in Communication, Application of Number and ICT, and a teacher reference recommending progression.

Further information

In addition to their main programme students will have the chance to take part in site visits giving them the opportunity to see a real construction site and talk to the workers. There is also a college enrichment programme that covers a number of activities and takes place during the lunch hour.
