Psychology A level at St Peter's RC High School & Sixth Form Centre

Course description

A-level Psychology is probably the right subject for you if human behaviour intrigues you.

While scientists and philosophers have been trying to unravel the mysteries of the mind for millennia, modern psychologists strive to add to our understanding of human behaviour in a way that is objective and driven by evidence.

A-level Psychology is therefore focused on the scientific method and on scientific techniques.

Course content

All prospective students who have succeeded at GCSE Science should know how experiments are carried out. We will build on this understanding of science, looking at how psychology emerged as a field of biological study before breaking off as a separate science. There is also a strong neuroscience element to the subject.

In A-level Psychology we do in addition look at how psychologists work in more applied fields, for example helping people with serious mental illnesses.

There is an emphasis on developing a student’s ability to write and to think clearly and critically.

Entry requirements

The general requirement to enter St Peter's Sixth Form to study 3 A levels, is 5 GCSEs at grade C / level 4 or above including English and Mathematics. Equivalent qualifications will be taken into account.

Required for this course:

5 in GCSE English and B in GCSE science

Students must recognise the scientific foundation to this subject. Psychology is a new science subject for most students entering the sixth form and is defined as ‘the scientific study of the mind and behaviour.’ .

A-level psychology is assessed solely through examinations at the end of two years of study.

Future opportunities

We have found that an A grade in psychology has helped students to secure a place in medical school.

Students with C grades and better have found that an A Level in psychology has helped them to successfully apply for a wide range of university courses, high level apprenticeships and jobs straight from sixth form study.
