History A-Level at Diss High School

Course description

The History A-Level course considers events, both in Britain and in Europe, during the Early Modern period. Students will study the establishment and rule of the Tudors (1483-1603) and developments during the German Reformation (c. 1500 – 1564); this was an exciting time when great changes took place. At the heart of these changes was religion, but this impacted the very nature of society, whether it be political, social, cultural or economic.

Course content

In Year 13, students will study a 200 year period which could look at the British economy and society in change (1760 – 1970) or European relations (c1763 – 1989). This will provide students with an opportunity to study history in breadth, gaining an understanding as to how past events have shaped the world we live in now.

A variety of proven, effective teaching methods are used during the course. However, students are also expected to work independently – reading around the subject and researching for presentations or essays. History requires students to be well organised and motivated. It encourages analytical skills, logical thought and clear expression (skills that link well with most other subjects) and prepares the student for work and study beyond their school experience.

Entry requirements

You are required to have at least five Cs at GCSE including Maths and English Language at Grade C.

Subject Specific

Grade B in either History or English Language

Students wishing to take A-Level History need not have taken History at GCSE, but should have a pass at B or above in either History or English Language GCSE.

Future opportunities

Many A-Level students go on to study History or History related courses at university (e.g. Classics or Archaeology) and this can lead to a wide variety of careers that might not be immediately obvious, such as law, media, financial services, teaching or design – all these sectors of employment look favourably on students who possess an A-Level in History.
