Business Studies Applied GCE at Smestow School

Course description

The new A’ Level Business course looks at how businesses operate in a variety of contexts covering large businesses / small businesses / local businesses / global businesses. You will study the competitive environment in which businesses operate. You will study strategic decision making and assess judgements on issues such as the impact of ICT, the role of Corporate Responsibility and Ethical issues. Much of the course is structured around functional areas such as marketing, operations, finance and human resources. Much of the course requires you to analyse situations and propose solutions to given problems.

Course content

The course content is structured into 10 topic areas; 1 What is Business 2 Management, leadership and decision making 3 Decisions to improve Marketing performance 4 Decisions to improve Operational performance 5 Decisions to improve Financial performance 6 Decisions to improve Human Resources performance 7 Analysing the strategic position of the business 8 Choosing a strategic direction 9 How to pursue chosen strategies 10 Managing strategic change

Entry requirements

Requirements to start this course are; 5 GCSE or equivalent including English and Maths at grade B. If you have previously taken Business it must be at least Merit or B grade GCSE equivalent.


There are 3 assessment papers; Paper 1 2hr written exam consisting of a mixture of long and short answer questions Paper 2 2hr written exam consisting of 3 data response compulsory questions Paper 3 2hr written exam consisting of a compulsory case study
