Sport BTEC First Award at Oldershaw Academy

Course description

This is a practical and theoretical course designed to provide a specialist work-related qualification in the sports sector. It will provide the knowledge, understanding and skills necessary to prepare learners for employment within the sports industry, or continued study towards the BTEC Level 3 Nationals. You can achieve Pass, Merit or Distinction in this subject which is recognised as the equivalent to 4 GCSE grades at A*-C

Course content

You will study two mandatory units:

  • Fitness Testing and Training
  • Practical Sport

You will also study four specialist units from the following; Anatomy and Physiology for Sport, Injury in Sport, Development of personal fitness, Effects of exercise on the body systems, Planning and running a sports event, Technical Skills and Technical Awareness for Sport, Psychology for Sports Performance, Exercise and fitness instruction.

Entry requirements

The course requires you to have 4 GCSEs at grades E or above. These should include English and Maths but you may re-take them in the Sixth Form if necessary.

Future opportunities

BTEC qualifications are recognised by employers and educational institutions and they provide a good progress route for more advanced qualifications e.g. BTEC Nationals, AS exams or directly into work or training in the Sports Industry.
