Chemistry at Colonel Frank Seeley School

Course description

Course Content We follow the AQA Chemistry curriculum which includes many modern aspects of Chemistry.
Units 1-3 are AS Units studied in Year 12.

Units 4-6 are A2 Units assessed at Year 13.

The units studied are as follows: AS Unit 1 – Foundation Chemistry Atomic structure and chemical bonding, Amount of substance, Periodicity, Organic Chemistry, Chemicals from oil.

AS Unit 2 – Chemistry in Action Energetics, Kinetics, Equilibra, Redox, Halogens and Alkaline Earth metals, Extraction of metals, Alkenes and Haloalkanes, Alcohols and analytical techniques.

AS Unit 3 – Coursework – Practical Skills Assessment (AS)

A2 Unit 4 – Kinetics Equilibria and Organic Chemistry Kinetics, Equilibria and Acid base theory, Organic Chemistry and Organic Synthesis, Polymers.

A2 Unit 5 – Energetics, Redox and Inorganic Chemistry Energetics and thermodynamics, Periodicity, Redox equilibria, Transition metals.

A2 Unit 6 – Coursework – Practical Skills Assessment (A2) The coursework units are assessed by internally marked practical investigations similar to those at GCSE. The coursework component is 20% of both the AS and A2 components.

Entry requirements

Students wishing to study Chemistry will be expected to have at least a Grade B in GCSE Chemistry or Grade B in both Science A and Additional Science, with a Grade B in GCSE Mathematics.
