Hair and Media Make-Up Level 2 Diploma at Exeter College

Course description

This course enables you to specialise in working for the media or cosmetic industry. You will participate in a faculty show or media production to gain much evidence towards this qualification.

There are practical and theoretical classes which will help you develop a portfolio of evidence for verification. There is some case study/project work. Practical skills are developed on fellow students - once a level of competence is reached clients are to be used for assessment. You will participate in outside events supporting the drama and dance productions with media make up. Balance of course 40% theory/60% practical.

Course content

You will study the following technical and core units:

  • Provide lash and brow treatments
  • Apply make up
  • The art of photographic make up
  • Body art design
  • Apply skin tanning techniques
  • The art of colouring hair
  • The art of dressing hair
  • Make and style a hair addition
  • Create an image based on a theme within the hair and beauty sector
  • Working in beauty related industries
  • Follow health and Safety practice in the salon
  • Client care and communication

Entry requirements

You need four GCSEs at Grade D including Art and Maths at D+, and English at C+, or a Level 1 Diploma in an Introduction to the Hair and Beauty sector qualification to include Functional Skills in English and Maths.

Assessment

You will be assessed practically, theoretically and orally in all areas. Testimonials may be required as evidence in some areas. Complete portfolios are verified and should include assessment books, case studies, projects, and theoretical papers. Some units have external on line test papers. 

Financial information

You will need a personal kit and uniform. There is an option to purchase a make up kit (which is not a course requirement) either separately or with the main kit at a reduced fee. You are responsible for providing your own working resources and sundries.

Future opportunities

You can work within the media industry or work for a cosmetic company. Alternatively, you may progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Hair and Media Make-up or the Beauty Therapy at Level 2, Hairdressing at Level 2 or gain employment and consider an apprenticeship in hairdressing.
