Course description

Government and Politics aims to develop awareness of the nature of politics and the relationship between political ideas, institutions and processes. To gain knowledge of how power is distributed within the UK. To gain knowledge of the rights and responsibilities of individuals to encourage participation by students. AS Key Areas of Study - 3 Units covering the following Political Participation, elections and democracy, the role and importance of pressure groups, the nature of the UK constitution, where power lies within the Political system and the effects of Britain’s membership of the EU. A2 Key Areas of Study - 3 units covering the following Political Ideologies: The beliefs of the Conservative Party, the changing ideas of Labour “Old and New”, Fascism, Communism, Liberalism and Feminism. Assessment Format AS 50% Unit 1 - Written 1 hour 15 mins Unit 2 - Written 1 hour 15 mins Unit 3 - Written 1 hour 15 mins A2 50% Unit 1 - Written 1 hour 15 mins Unit 2 - Written 1 hour 15 mins Unit 3 - Written (synoptic) 1 hour 30 mins

Advanced GCE in Government and Politics could lead to a wide range of careers and higher education courses. You could take it with other advanced level courses or equivalent to prepare for higher education in areas of Governments and Politics or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to Government and Politics such as working for the local or national government within areas of housing, tax, education, travel and other areas of government. You could also train further to become a member of parliament! The course will also help you develop the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for, especially in the government related sectors.
