Philosophy & Ethics A Level at Southfield School for Girls Specialist Sports and Science College

Course description

The knowledge, understanding and skills required in the Philosophy and Ethics AS and A2 Level courses are highly valued by employers and Universities.

Course content

The Course looks at a variety of topics including ethics, ethical cases, ancient Philosophers, arguments for the existence of God, Religious Teachings and philosophy and religion in contemporary society.

Year 12 consists of two units.  The topics covered in Philosophy are:

  • How do we really know what is real?
  • Does God exist?
  • How can we challenge religious beliefs?
  • What happens when we die?
  • Do miracles ever happen?
  • Can a Religious Experience prove God exists?

Year 13 consists of two units. The topics covered in Ethics are:

  • Business Ethics
  • Sexual Ethics
  • Environmental Ethics
  • Where do we get our morality?
  • Is abortion ever right?
  • Do we have a ‘right’ to life?

Entry requirements

Students must achieve at least a grade B at GCSE RS and at least a grade 6 in English.


Candidates will be examined at the end of A2 in three examinations.

There is no coursework.

Future opportunities

The subject includes many other disciplines which put you in a good position to apply for any course at University. If you wish to go directly into work, this qualification will be of particular help in professions which involve dealing with people (such as management, medicine, teaching, police, armed services), or involve issues, arguments, opinion and debate (such as law, journalism, politics).
