Business Studies at Runshaw College
Why should I come to Runshaw to study Business Studies?
Business at Runshaw is a unique subject in that a lot of what you learn can be applied to many different subject areas and provides useful knowledge for the rest of your life, after all, whatever your future career - it will be in a business!
The Business team achieved a Grade 1 in the last Ofsted Inspection. This success and commitment was also recognised nationally when the department won the prestigious Beacon Award.
Your teachers have a wealth of experience with many having spent time in industry, and all being examiners.
We also have a superb enrichment programme, with recent trips abroad to visit the UN & Federal Reserve Bank, Florence, Shanghai and The European Parliament in Brussels. These visits offer you a fantastic opportunity to see business in action!
We strive to stretch and challenge our students by offering a Horizons Programme, where additional activities and events allow you to refine your business skills through practical activities, workshops and guest speakers.
The pass rate for this course in 2018 was 100%, with 70% of students achieving A*-B grades. This is 25% above the national benchmark.
What will I study?
Students will study Business in a variety of contexts; large & small businesses, UK focussed along with global businesses, as well as looking at the service and manufacturing industry.
The focus in Year 2 is on the study of strategic decision making where you will consider: the impact of technology on strategic decision making; the influences of Corporate Social Responsibility, ethical and environmental issues on strategic decisions and the difficulties in forecasting future trends.

For access to our A Level Programme, our entry requirements are 5 x Grade 5 equivalent (5 x Grade 5 or B) in a range of separate subjects.
For Business Studies specifically, this should include a Grade 5 in Maths AND a Grade 5 in a written subject.
How is the course assessed?
There are three written examinations at the end of Year 2, which cover the content of the business specification.
No course fees are applicable for 16-18 year old learners who meet funding regulations.
What will this course prepare me for?
The majority of students go on to university, where Business represents the largest single subject in the university sector.
For potential employers, Business, with its broad study base and balance of numerical and written skills, is an ideal foundation for the recruitment of students for managerial positions and offers all the skills employers have recently said are lacking in new recruits.
