A2 Level Drama & Theatre Studies at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy

Course description

AS consists of 2 units which are: 1. The study of 2 plays with exploration notes which are internally assessed and externally moderated. At least one of these plays must be explored in relation to a recognised theatre practitioner. Students are also required to experience a live theatre performance and submit an evaluation. 2. The study of another play which is led by a tutor and performed by students to a visiting examiner, as well as the performance of a monologue or duologue. A2 also consists of 2 units: 1. Creating an original piece of drama in groups to perform to an invited audience. 2. The study of a set text play from a director's point of view. The study of one prescribed historical period. Both aspects will be assessed in a 2 1/2 hour written exam and a 'Research Folder'. How the course is assessed: AS: Unit 1 Exploration of Drama & Theatre Unit 2 Theatre Text in Performance A2: Unit 3 Exploration of Dramatic Performance Unit 4 Text in Context (written exam) Skills and attributes which students need to be successful include: 1. Experience of a broad based arts curriculum in KS3 and KS4. 2. Regular attendance, self-motivation and self-discipline 3. Ability and willingness to work collaboratively with others in the creative process. 4. Willingness to express yourself individually and interactively with others in performance. What students do after successful completion: 1. Go on to further study in Higher Education 2. Employment in the general field of drama 3. Apply their skills to leisure and recreational activities 4. Become confident, expressive and assertive

Entry requirements

Students should fulfil the general entry requirements to study A levels at the Centre. AS/A2 level Drama & Theatre Studies would be a complementary course to those students studying AS/A2 level English.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses, which could be related to the performing arts, to prepare for higher education in the arts or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to the performing arts such as working in the Film, Television or Theatre industries. You may also like to look at joining a theatre group to increase your drama and theatre experience. The course offers a distinct subject content which provides you with the skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers from lots of industries are looking for.
