Art & Design Diploma Level 1 Diploma 1 at The Manchester College

Course description

If you’re completely new to art and design but would like to get stuck in straight away, then this introductory, Level 1 Diploma is the ideal place to begin. It’s designed specifically to develop a foundation of practical skills and knowledge in art and design, helping you to progress onto higher levels of study. You’ll get to work on a diverse range of creative assignments, covering areas such as animation, print, fashion, photography and mixed media. Some projects will include live briefs, giving you the chance to work directly with employers and develop first hand experience. As part of the course, you’ll also develop a host of essential study skills that will help you through any subject or future employment, including how to research effectively, how to think creatively, how to manage your time, and how to work well in a team. As with nearly all of our creative qualifications this diploma is awarded by University of the Arts London Awarding Body - the only specialist creative arts awarding body in the UK.

Entry requirements

You’ll need to have at least two GCSEs at grade G or above to enrol on this course, and be willing to participate in Functional Skills classes in Maths & English. Due to Government changes to grading systems for GCSES in 16/17, please follow the below link to see specific entry criteria for school leavers School Leaver Entry Requirements.If you’re an adult learner, you’ll be able to join us on this Level 1 Diploma without previous qualifications if you can attend an interview and show us your ability to cope with the demands of study, based on your previous experience, commitment and interests.


For this Level 1 Diploma, you’ll be assessed through a series of integrated art & design projects. All assessment briefs are designed to combine your practical skills and creative thinking. You may also take part in some presentations, group discussions and computer workshops.

You’ll be able to advance your creative abilities and develop your expertise further with more independent and challenging projects. You’ll also continue to learn the essential skills that will help you succeed in any career in the design & visual arts industry, whether you’d like to be an animator or a prop maker, a fashion designer or a tattooist.

      Local area

      Northenden is a suburb of south Manchester. There are shops, a supermarket, restaurants and takeaways 15 minutes’ walk from the campus in central Northenden. There are also a small supermarket and shops closer to the campus. Northenden is surrounded by green space. The campus is minutes away from Gib Lane Wood and Wythenshawe Park which includes a community farm. It is also close to the Mersey Valley nature reserve; a riverside walk through miles of countryside and parkland.
