Drama and Theatre A Level at The Rochester Grammar School

Course description

The WJEC Eduqas A level in Drama and Theatre is an exciting and inspiring course which prepares you for further study in Higher Education. This highly practical specification provides you with the opportunity to work as either performers and/or designers on three different performances.

Course content

  • You will enjoy this course if you want to study a subject that involves;
  • Presenting practical work as either an actor or technical designer
  • Exploring the work of recognised theatre practitioners
  • Devising your own theatrical work based on stimuli
  • Studying a range of theatrical texts
  • Working creatively with others
  • Observing live theatre
Theatre trips are a core element of the course, and all students will see at least four live theatre
performances during their two years of study; often more.


Entry requirements

You are required to have a Grade 6 in Drama and involvement in drama is required for entry onto this course. 

If you have not studied GCSE, then 6 in English Literature or Language and involvement in drama is required.

Candidates do need to possess the confidence to perform, as acting is a compulsory element.  Opportunities will, however, be available to those interested in directing, lighting, design or sound in theatre.


In order to gain access to The RGS Sixth Form, students must obtain 5 GCSE grades 9-6 (A*-B) including English Language and Mathematics.

Theatre Studies has links with the following subjects: English Literature, English Language, Music, Art, History and Media.

Drama and Theatre Studies provides students with a wide range of skills applicable to careers demanding good communications and teamwork, such as  theatre management, film and TV work, as well as journalism, public relations, teaching and lecturing.  Those wishing to study law or medicine will also feel that many of the inter‑personal skills developed on the course are of great benefit.
