Sport Outdoor Adventure EDEXCEL BTEC Extended Diploma Level 3 at Duchy College

Course description

Learners who would like to become employable and go straight into work at an approved outdoor centre in the UK or France after the course.

Learners who also want to gain 3x A level equivalent qualifications (up to 420 UCAS points) to gain entry in to Higher Education after the course before entering employment.

Learners who are highly motivated with a strong work ethic and enjoy taking part in practical days each week whatever the weather.

Learners who want the opportunity to gain a range of outdoor / leadership NGB qualifications relevant to gaining employment in the outdoor industry, e.g. Paddlesports 1* & 2*, BCU Level 1 Coach, CWA training, Mountain Bike Leaders Level 1, First Aid for the Outdoors.

Course content

You will undertake 19 units over two years, across four 16 week semesters. You will have two full practical days for the whole two years so that in that time you will have developed your water and land-based skills; as well as completed leadership training to make you employable at the end.

Practical activities include: Kayaking, Mountain Biking, Hill Walking, Canoeing, Surfing, Coasteering, Orienteering, Problem Solving and Climbing. You will help to lead activities with school groups and organise events/festivals.

The NGB qualification opportunities (subject to student ability and attendance) are: BCU 1*, 2*, 3* (subject to personal ability), BCU Level 1 Paddlesports Coach, FSRT, CWA Training, Group Leadership Day Walking, MIAS Level 1 Mountain Biking.

The modules will be delivered with a very hands-on practical approach during outdoor sessions and classroom based theory sessions. Examples of these units include Principles and Practices in Outdoor Adventure, Skills for Land and Water Based Activities, Anatomy and Physiology, Water and Land-based Leadership, Outdoor and Adventurous Expeditions.

Coursework assessments are planned periodically throughout the 4 semesters and take on a variety of formats e.g. verbal, observations, written. You will have weekly tutorials to help you organise your time and studies, discuss you progress and career aspirations. During this time, you will be offered careers advice and guidance for employment and university options after your course.

There is a summer work placement planned at the end of the 2nd year from Easter onwards (depending on age of students - ideally you will be 18 by the time this takes place) at an approved outdoor centre.

Entry requirements

5x GCSEs at grade C or above in ideally Maths, English, Science and/or PE (other relevant subjects may be considered).

OR

An equivalent level 2 qualification at Merit level, preferably in a relevant subject area, e.g. First Diploma or Level 2 Diploma in Sport or Public Services.

Future opportunities

You will be eligible to progress onto one of our Cornwall College Foundation Degree courses based at Camborne, Falmouth and St Austell or external Higher Education Institution.

You will also be able to progress into employment.
