German A Level at Kesteven and Sleaford High School Selective Academy

Course description

By studying AS and/or A2 level German, you will not only extend your listening, speaking, reading and writing
skills developed at GCSE, but also acquire an understanding of the contemporary culture of the countries
where the languages are spoken through the study of topic areas. You will also greatly improve your job /
university prospects too.
German AS
Based on four main topic areas, all 4 skills are developed during the AS course. Texts are read, a variety of
spoken sources listened to or viewed, topics are discussed and language and grammar skills are improved.
Time is spent with the Language Assistant each week to encourage and improve spoken German.
The 4 Topics
Media, Popular Culture, Healthy Living/Lifestyle,Family Relationships.
There are two mandatory AS units, which form 50% of a full A Level.
Unit 1 is a written paper testing listening, reading and writing skills. It represents 70% of AS marks, (35% of A
Unit 2 is a speaking test, with a prompted discussion and general topic discussion. It represents 30% of AS
marks (15% of A Level).
German A2
There are two further units (Unit 3 Listening, Reading & Writing 35%, Unit 4 Speaking 15%)
At A2 four topics are studied. These are: 2 x Cultural topics, the Environment, The Multi cultural Society and
Contemporary Social Issues.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for entry to the Sixth form is 5 GCSEs at Grades A* to C including English and Mathematics. In addition a B grade or above in German. Sound language skills are required.
