IT BTEC Level 3 Diploma at Bedford College

Course description

This course will provide you with the knowledge and experience required to start building a career in a range of IT jobs, including programming, web design, technical support and networking. You will acquire a range of IT related skills to equip you for progression to employment or Higher Education. This Level 3 Diploma is equivalent to two A-Levels.

Course content

You will complete units in both software development and networking, including:

Year 1:

  • Communication and employability skills
  • Computer systems
  • Event-driven programming
  • Spreadsheet modelling
  • Controlling systems using IT
  • Website production.


Year 2:

  • Information systems
  • E-commerce
  • Software design and development
  • Client side customisation of web pages
  • Computer networks
  • Technical support.


All students who have not achieved a GCSE grade C in English or Mathematics will be required to study towards these qualifications or Functional Skills at the appropriate level.

You will also be required to complete a work placement which helps to develop skills required in the workplace. During the course there will be the opportunity to participate in a range of trips: over the past few years students have enjoyed trips to Thorpe Park, RAF Duxford and Worldskills in London.

Entry requirements

To start this course you will need four GCSEs at grade A*-C (including English or Mathematics), OR Information & Creative Technology Level 2 Extended Certificate qualification with Functional Skills. Entry will also be subject to a successful interview.


You will be assessed through coursework, assignments and tests. During the course you will be expected to work and develop assignments outside timetabled lessons.

Financial information

This course could be free! You will be eligible if you are aged 19 or over on the 31st August of the year you are starting your course and are actively seeking employment and in receipt of a means tested benefit (such as job seekers, housing benefit, council tax benefit). Please note you will need to be able to produce evidence of the benefit in your name when you come to enrol.

Future opportunities

On successful completion of this course you can progress onto the IT Networking & Security Foundation Degree, the HNC/HND Computing & Systems Development or a computing-related degree. You can also progress into careers in many IT related disciplines at technician level or in a technical support role, and progress to professional status in your chosen field. Examples include systems analysis and design, software engineering, computing, computer networking, computer user support and helpdesk technician. This qualification attracts up to 240 UCAS points towards entry to a degree-level course.
