Hairdressing - Level 1 Diploma at Harrow College

Course description

The course is designed to develop students practical skills and associated science and theory for: shampoo and conditioning, colouring hair with temporary colours, styling womens hair, the art of dressing hair, salon reception, retail displays, hair plaiting, Health and Safety and customer care. Students also need to take part in an assisting role in the salon and work with other levels of learners in this curriculum area.

Course content

The course is designed to develop students practical skills and associated science and theory for: shampoo and conditioning, colouring hair with temporary colours, styling womens hair, the art of dressing hair, salon reception, retail displays, hair plaiting, Health and Safety and customer care. Students also need to take part in an assisting role in the salon and work with other levels of learners in this curriculum area.

This course is divided into units and delivered in theory and practical sessions. You may also study Literacy, Numeracy and ICT alongside this qualification to help improve your employability opportunities.

Entry requirements

3 GCSE grades D-F, candidates must be able to write and speak English to at least Entry Level 3. Hairdressing experience would be an advantage. Candidates should have good communication skills and be able to work with others. They should also have a calm and professional approach as they will be working with clients and will be assessed on their skills and knowledge in Hairdessing. Candidates need to complete a Profiler Assessment test in English and Maths and a written &and practical assessment.

Assessment

You will be assessed throughout the course on both practical observation assessments and theory; you will be assessed on assignments, tests, work packs, oral questions and written paper. You will build a portfolio of evidence that is internally and externally verified.

Future opportunities

Successful candidates will have the opportunity to progress on to courses such as NVQ Level 2 in Hairdressing or possibly another vocational qualification at level 2.(We would recommend that you check entry requirements for other level 2 qualifications as entry requirements may vary.)

Further information

Equipment or materials:

Hair kit, uniform and recommended course textbook. The kit, uniform and textbook need to be paid for during enrolment at the start of the course. Uniform order forms will be given to you at enrolment. You will also need a USB, writing materials, paper and folders for a portfolio and your own theory work.

Additional costs:

Costs of visits and exhibitions, approximately £20.
