Sport & Exercise Science BTEC Level 3 Subsidiary Diploma at Carshalton College

Course description

This course is designed for school leavers wanting a career within the sports industry or to progress onto Higher Education.

You will study six BTEC units in addition to  a further short course qualifications which will prepare you for work in the sports, exercise or coaching industries.

Course content

The six units you will study include:

  • Anatomy for Sport & Exercise
  • Sports & Exercise Physiology
  • Sport & Exercise Psychology
  • Fitness Testing for Sport & Exercise Sciences
  • Fitness Training & Programming
  • Instructing Physical Activity & Exercise

Throughout the one year of your course you can also gain the following short course qualifications:-

  • YMCA Level 2 Certificate in Fitness Instructing - Gym-Based Exercise
  • Level 2 English/Maths Functional Skills
  • GCSE English or Maths


Entry requirements

Four or more GCSEs at grades A-C (Science and English essential, PE desirable), or you will have successfully completed a Level 2 programme to Pass and gained  Functional Skill English at Level 1 or Level 2.

You may also be asked to demonstrate your commitment and skills in an interview.

A positive reference is also required from school, employer or tutor (if progressing or from another college). A record of attendance and punctuality is also required.


You will be assessed in a number of ways from a written portfolio of evidence to video recorded sports performance.

Financial information

Tuition, exam and registration fees not applicable to students aged 16 - 18 years.

You may be required to purchase a travel card for additional visits that may be arranged during the year.

To enrol on this course you will be required to buy a uniform which will cost £40.

Future opportunities

BTEC Subsidiary Diplomas are valued by employers and in Higher Education (universities and colleges).

You could progress into Higher Education to study a HNC/HND, or you can go directly into employment.
