Drama and Theatre Studies A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Royal Hospital School

Course description

To promote an enjoyment of and an interest in drama and theatre, both as a participant and as an informed member of an audience. To extend the skills, knowledge and understanding needed to communicate through drama and theatre, encouraging life-long learning.

The course provides opportunities to develop, interpret and shape ideas, explore the social, historical and cultural context of plays, analyse performance, understand forms and genre, develop skills, and acquire a knowledge of theories and concepts. A genuine interest in and love of theatre is essential.

Course content

Unit 1: Live Production Seen and Prescribed Play
Unit 2: Presentation of an Extract from a Play
Unit 3: Further Prescribed Plays
Unit 4: Presentation of Devised Drama

The performance examinations are each supported by a short written portfolio. The performances are formal examinations but they can have the feel of coursework, since the rehearsal process, for which marks are awarded, is protracted. They take place in the Lent term for A2 and at the very start of the Summer term for AS.
