Course description

Two separate BTEC qualifications to enable each student to finish with two Science GCSE equivalents. Each BTEC will have an exam as part of the compulsory study as well as approximately 75% being assessed via written assignments.

Topics covered in the course:

There are 3 core modules per year of the BTEC course, one of Biology, Chemistry and Physics in each year. The year 10 modules are as follows:-

Biology - Biology and our Environment

Chemistry - Chemistry and our Earth

Physics - Energy and our Universe.

Each unit is broken down into several learning outcomes, each of which is addressed by an assignment.

Pupils will be taught a series of lessons covering the whole topic, and then spend approximately 4 lessons on their first attempt at the assignment. After first marking the pupils are entitled to another couple of lessons work in order to try and fully achieve the criteria before the assignment is fully complete.

Why you should study this subject:

Science is a Core subject and as such all students must study it. Science along with English and Maths are vital for any further study in Higher or Further Education. However, alongside that comes the fact that having a good grounding in Science allows you to start to understand the world around us, in a better way. Biodiversity, Frontline Medicine and the need for research into alternative forms of energy are just some of the topics at the forefront of Scientific research at the moment. These are topics that you will see on the news all of the time, and that at a basic level are covered in the work that you will learn.
