Further Mathematics AS/A Level *FEES PAYABLE* at Oundle School

Course description

Further Mathematics is a second A level in Mathematics which is taken in conjunction with the A level. It should only be considered by those who have been in one of the top Fifth Form sets and are expecting to achieve an A* grade comfortably at IGCSE. It may be a requirement for anyone who intends to study Engineering, Economics or Mathematics at a top university. It provides a real challenge for those who are more gifted in this subject and leads to a deep exploration of more advanced topics.

It should be noted that Further Mathematics is an additional A level which builds on the content of the Single Mathematics A level: it contains more difficult topics, not just different topics. Candidates cannot choose Further Mathematics as a stand-alone subject; it must be chosen alongside Mathematics. Pupils opting for Double Mathematics (Mathematics and Further Mathematics) will be expected to complete at least another two subjects to A level or Pre-U.

Pupils may choose to take Further Mathematics as a main subject. They must then also choose two other main subjects (to complete to A level or Pre-U) and an extension course. The number of lessons for Double Mathematics in two of the subject main blocks will be twelve per week over the two years of the Sixth Form.

Exceptional Mathematicians from the top sets may choose to take Further Mathematics in the extension block. This would enable pupils to take Double Mathematics with three other main subjects. This option is at the discretion of the Director of Studies in consultation with the Head of Mathematics, and may require a qualifying assessment. The number of lessons for Double Mathematics as a combination of one main subject block and the extension course will be ten per week in the Lower Sixth and eight per week in the Upper Sixth.
