Art and Design BTEC Level 2 Extended Certificate at Southport College

Course description

To introduce students to a range of Art and Design subject areas and to enable students to develop the basic skills and knowledge relevant to these areas, therefore providing a good basis to go on to a more advanced qualification.

Course content

A range of subject areas are studied through eight units, including; 
• Painting & drawing 
• 2 Dimensional & 3 Dimensional design 
• The work of other artists and designers 
You will also experience a broad range of specialisms including: 
• Photography
• Textiles 
• 3D design & crafts 
• Fine art 
• Printmaking

Entry requirements

• 3 GCSEs at grade D or Level 1 Diploma in related subject
• Good portfolio that demonstrates examples of drawing from observation and a willingness to explore new ideas 
• Successful interview 
• Satisfactory reference 


Assessment is ongoing throughout the year, based mainly on practical assignments with some written components. All units are assessed and graded, and an overall grade for the qualification is awarded. Two of the units are externally assessed.

Financial information

Students are supplied with some basic materials, but will need to purchase various items as the course progresses. The college shop sells materials at reasonable prices. Students will also have to pay for any study trips. The tutor will provide details when the course starts.

Future opportunities

If you achieve a Merit grade you may progress on to a level 3 Diploma course in a variety of Art and Design areas including; Art, Design & Media, Graphics, Photography, Media or Games & Animation.
