Applied Science BTEC L3 at Ormiston Park Academy
This course is designed to develop your existing knowledge and interest in the world of science whilst preparing you for a specific route into a chosen career or university course. If you’re passionate about all areas of Science and enjoy understanding how science is used in every aspect of our daily life, then you will love this course. Applied Science will take you on a journey studying a wide range of topics across all three of the science disciplines: biology, chemistry and physics. There is the opportunity to extend your learning further by studying specific units linked to one of the disciplines and top up your subsidiary diploma into a 90 credit diploma. You will gain an academic and practical insight into many of the areas in the science industry, providing you with the information to make a choice about what is the next step for you. All students are expected to be full-time students.
Throughout your studies you will explore the fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, using practical techniques and investigations, developing your understanding of the physiology of our human body systems and microbiology. You will delve into the industrial applications of organic chemistry and medical physics to further your knowledge in these specific areas. You will have opportunities to extend your learning in a specific area of Science and plan and complete experiments to test your own and others’ hypotheses.
A minimum of 5 GCSEs at Grade C or above. There are no specific entry criteria for this qualification, although possessing a GCSE in one of the Sciences would be advantageous.
You will be taught in a theoretical and practical setting and assessed via practical investigations and written investigation papers.
Your successes in this subject can lead to degree courses at university that are specific such physiotherapy, teaching, sports therapy or nutrition. You can also gain entry onto wider courses at university such as sports science and sports studies. BTEC sport will provide you with great foundations to access a higher level apprenticeship in a particular area of the sports industry, and careers such as sports coaching, health and fitness instructors, athlete development or sports development officer.
Opportunities lie to support the Science department in the Academy working with students in Years 7-11. OPA works with our feeder primary schools to offer Science lessons, which you could assist in planning and leading. OPA6 will assist you in arranging for a work placement position within local businesses that utilise the world of sciences.
