English Literature A Level at Bourne Grammar School

Course description

English Literature is concerned with culture, creativity and communication. The course is diverse; writers from all periods are studied. The close study of books which lie at the heart of our shared culture will enable us to understand more fully the period of history in which they were written and the techniques employed by their authors. We will also reflect on the processes that make up the study of literature and how we analyse and evaluate literary texts.
Texts covered at AS include poetry, novels and a modern play. In the second year the study of these genres will be expanded and broadened. In the process of studying the writing of others, your own ability to develop an argument, produce a coherent and cogent essay, master a quantity of information and discuss your ideas in public will grow. English Literature is a fascinating subject in its own right to pursue at university, but it would also provide a platform for the study of almost any other course, as its core skills are fundamental. Pleasure in reading is essential, as is the ability to analyse ideas and formulate arguments. A broad mind and an interest in the cut and thrust of discussion are a definite advantage
