Chemistry at Attleborough Academy Norfolk

Course description

The Science Department currently teaches an exciting Chemistry course which is innovative and ‘context-led’. It is practical based and further develops the ideas of ‘How Science Works’ from the new Science GCSE. The course is OCR Chemistry B (Salters). It is divided into 6 units, with 3 AS units taught in Year 12 and three A2 units taught in Year 13. The six units are:

AS Level Units: Chemistry for Life, e.g. developing fuels

Chemistry of Natural Resources, e.g. elements from the sea

Chemistry in Practice (internally assessed coursework on five skill areas: competence, measurement, analysis and evaluation, observation and interpretation).

A2 Level Units:

Chemistry in Materials, e.g. what’s in a medicine?

Chemistry by Design e.g. colour by design

Chemistry Individua

l Investigation (18 hour internally assessed practical investigation).

Entry requirements

To study this course at A Level you will be required to achieve, in addition to the general entry requirements, two grade B’s in any of the following: GCSE Science, GCSE Additional Science, GCSE Further Additional or GCSE Chemistry, plus grade C in GCSE Mathematics and Grade C in English Language.Please note that BTEC and OCR National courses in Science do not fulfil the entry requirements.
