Course content

Studying Health and Social Care allows you to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills to meet the needs of the health and social care sectors, and to understand the role of the health and social care workers, their relationship with patients/service users and their responsibilities towards them.You will complete 3 units over two years. You must complete 2 compulsory unit and 1 optional unit to achieve the full award; however you can also gain certificates for individual units. The compulsory units are Communication in Care Settings and Practical Caring.

Entry requirements

Students typically study this qualification alongside a set of similar qualifications (level 2) throughout the 5-day week. This will be the first time that most students will study health & social care as a subject itself and will encourage them to analyse health and social care from different perspectives.


Assessment: There are no exams. Your teacher will assess your work, which is portfolio-based, for all the units and this will be checked by OCR, the awarding body. The award is equivalent to 2 GCSEs at grade A*-CFor more details see 

Future opportunities

OCR Health and Social Care provides opportunities to start work as, for example, a trainee care assistant. There is also the opportunity to entre employment and undertake a related NVQ, for example NVQ Care or NVQ Early Years Care and Education. You can also progress to take another Level 2 or Level 3 qualification such as AS/A2 Health & Social Care.
