Engineering BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma at Oaklands College

Course description

A broad range of units covering mechanical, electrical and electronic disciplines. Enabling a firm understanding in the key engineering fields.

Course content

Units covered over the 2 year course. Communications, Maths, Electrical and Electronic Principles, Mechanical Principles and Applications, Health and Safety, CAD, Materials, Secondary Finishing Processes, Principles and Applications of Electronic Devices and Circuits, Commercial Aspects, Project, Engineering Design, Electro Pneumatics and Hydraulics Systems and Devices, Electronic Measurement and Test and Electronic Fault Finding. 2 options from the following units of Further Maths, Further Mechanical Principles, Electrical Technology and CNC are taken in year 2.

Entry requirements

Five GCSEs at Grade C or above including Maths (Higher Tier) and Science or a BTEC First Diploma in Engineering at Merit. Applicants with other qualifications or without traditional qualifications are also encouraged to apply and will be interviewed.

The Extended Diploma in Engineering is suitable for those candidates who wish to obtain a professional career in the engineering industry and to go on to an engineering degree or HNC/HND.


Assessment is by a series of assignments (course work).

Financial information

16-18 years old, no tuition fees apply to Full Time courses and fees subject to confirmation. Additional costs applicable to BHS courses.

Future opportunities

Upon completion of the 2 year Extended Diploma you can progress onto either a Higher National Certi?cate, a degree course or into employment.
