Applied Science: Medical and Forensic (Level 2) at Central College Nottingham

Course description

This is a practical, work-related course and you will study in a realistic laboratory work environment. The course prepares you for progression onto further science- based qualifications. It also provides a pathway for those wanting to further develop their skills and knowledge within the health and science professions.

Course content

Depending upon the chosen pathway, you will study from the following units:

  • Applications of Chemical Substances
  • Applications of Physical Science
  • Practical Scientific Project
  • The Living Body
  • Science in Medicine
  • Biology and Our Environment
  • Investigating a Crime Scene
  • Investigating Human Behaviour

You will be expected to study both Functional Skills in English and Maths to Level 2. English and Maths are an essential part of your studies and will help you succeed on your course. These subjects will help you develop confidence and are the key employability skills that all employers now look for when recruiting.

Entry requirements

One of the following:

  • 5 GCSEs at grades A*-D including English Language*, Maths and Science
  • A relevant Level 1 qualification including GCSE English Language* and Maths at grade A*-D

*If you do not have GCSE English Language at A*-D, we may accept a Grade E in addition to your 5 GCSEs at A*-D. Functional Skills may be accepted instead of GCSE English and/or Maths. Functional Skills Level 1 is equivalent to GCSE Grade D and Level 2 to GCSE Grade C.

Adults who are aged 19+ with relevant industry experience but without the necessary qualifications are welcome to apply.

Assessment

Assessment is assignment based throughout the course. Your progression will be monitored during academic tutorials.

Future opportunities

BTEC Level 3 course in Medical, Forensic or Applied Science.

Further information

To support your application we will ask you to bring in a school report and a handwritten personal statement (one side of A4 paper).

You will be expected to wear low heeled, closed toe shoes, laboratory coats and eye goggles while working in the laboratories.
