Exercise, Fitness and Introduction to Personal Training Level 2 at South Downs College

Course description

The course is for students who have an interest in fitness and are thinking about a career in exercise and fitness training.

This could be in a leisure centre, health club, fitness organisations, holiday resorts, sport and fitness shops, health promotion or even alongside coaching roles within a sports club.

Students who wish to go on and become a Personal Trainer but do not meet the entry requirements for the level 3 Personal Trainer course can gain entry by completing this course.

Students who wish to progress onto any sport & fitness Level 3 course but do not meet the entry requirements for a level 3 course but enjoy exercise and fitness activities.

An enthusiasm to teach and lead others is more important than focus on the individual’s own fitness level, although there is an expectation to regularly participate in fitness activities.

Course content

The emphasis of the course is on:

  • Learning how to exercise in a safe and effective way
  • Learning how to teach and lead others to exercise in a safe and effective way
  • Understanding how to improve fitness for yourself and others

Modules can vary from year to year and could include:

  • Fitness instruction
  • Strength and conditioning
  • Leading fitness activities
  • Anatomy & physiology
  • Principles of fitness training
  • Nutrition
  • Physical activity and injuries
  • Fitness through sport and outdoor activities
  • Work Experience
  • Personal Development
  • Other course content could include:
  • Visits to other Fitness Facilities
  • Trips to outdoor environments
  • Team projects and charity events


Entry requirements

A minimum of 4 GCSEs at Grade D or above; including English Language or Maths at grade D or above.

Alternatively, a level 1 qualification in a related area (achieved at college) while working towards English and/or Maths will be accepted as minimum requirement.

All subject to interview.



Essentially you will complete a portfolio of work.

This will consist of evidence gained through: practical assessment, worksheets, observations, interviews and controlled assessment.


Future opportunities

Progress to the Level 3 Diploma in Physical Activity, Fitness & Sport science (Personal Training and Sports Injury Management) course to qualify as a Personal Trainer & Massage Therapist (will require a merit at level 2 and progress in English/Maths)

Progress to any level 3 Sport, Fitness or Public Services course (usually require Merit)

Gain employment in careers where level 2 Fitness, Exercise and Sport knowledge will be essential or desirable

Level 2 apprenticeships in Fitness Instruction to qualify as a Fitness Instructor
