Who is this qualification for?
The Level 3 Diploma in Theatrical, Special Effects and Hair and Media Make-Up (QCF) is a technical level qualification for learners seeking a career as an employed and/or self-employed theatrical media make-up artist working with performers to a high level
of occupational ability, providing hair and make-up services in the media, theatre, performing arts, fashion and photographic industries.
This qualification is based on hairdressing and beauty therapy National Occupational Standards (NOS) and is recognised by the UK's lead beauty therapy professional association (The British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology - BABTAC) as being fit for purpose for preparing learners for a career as a professional theatrical media make-up artist.
Entry onto this qualification can be via previous attainment of a Level 2 hair or beauty qualification and/or a successful skills test and interview.
What does this qualification cover?
This qualification has been specifically designed for the 16-19 age group, builds on existing knowledge and understanding of media hair and beauty skills and will develop an enhanced repertoire of technical skills to prepare learners for employment as a
professional theatrical media make-up artist. Learners will have their skills assessed in a real or realistic working environment.
This qualification includes all the required elements to work effectively as a professional theatrical media make-up artist including: health and safety practice; client care and communication; airbrush make-up to the face; camouflage make-up; media make-up;
fashion and photographic make-up; style and fit postiche and the application of prosthetic pieces and bald caps. These units are all mandatory.
Learners will further develop their understanding and skills by selecting a number of optional specialist units which include: create and cast small prosthetic pieces and bald caps; face and body art; fantasy hair design; production arts planning; eyelash and brow treatments and 2D visual communication. This qualification's structure provides learners with the flexibility to develop the knowledge, understanding and skills depending upon their designated career pathway as a professional theatrical media make-up artist.
It is recommended that learners have achieved a level of education equivalent to four GCSE’s at grades A*-C prior to commencing the programme, however, learners should discuss their own circumstances with the College as entry is based on qualifications, skills and experience as well as a keen interest in a career in the Beauty Therapy industry.
- Assessment is through portfolio building and continual assessment of practical skills, written work and assignments.

What could this qualification lead to?
Learners who complete this qualification are eligible to become a member of the British Association of Beauty Therapy and Cosmetology (BABTAC).
