Media Studies A Level at Warrington & Vale Royal College

Course description

This course is perfect for those who enjoy creating films and documentaries and have an interest in pursuing a career in the media industry.

Course content

In this A Level, you will be analysing a wide range of media products. You will gain an understanding of the impact of visual, audio and written elements and how recent technical innovations are impacting. You will also study how different groups are portrayed in the media. The subject also examines the world of popular music.

You will undertake a research project on a media topic of your choice which will allow you to develop a range of skills.

Entry requirements

The minimum requirement for progression onto an A Level pathway is at least five grade 5s at GCSE, including English.

We would expect students looking to study a media A Level to have a grade 5 in English language and/or English literature. We do not expect you to have studied media studies at GCSE, but it would be an advantage.

We will look at each application individually and flexibly and will discuss your choice of courses.


This is an academic course following a two year linear A Level, with terminal exams.

Will I complete work placements?

You will have the opportunity to undertake an appropriate work experience or internship. This will give you a real understanding of the world of work or career you are considering and will undoubtedly give you a competitive edge in any application or interviews. This will take place for most students in a block placement in June/July of Year 12.

Are trips and residentials organised during the course?

Trips and/or enrichment activities will take place on a Wednesday each week.

    • By Rail: Anyone travelling by train should disembark at Central Station in Warrington. Our Winwick Road Campus is around a 20 minute walk along the A49 (you will pass the Warrington Wolves RLFC stadium and the Tesco supermarket on your left).

      By Bus: Warrington & Vale Royal College is easily accessible by bus from the town centre and nearby Cheshire districts. Bus numbers* 19, 20, 21, 22 from the Warrington Bus Station to Winwick Road Campus.
