Sport and Active Leisure Level 1 at Sheffield College
The course is aimed at young people who have a keen interest in sport and fitness and would like to pursue a career in sport and active leisure. This course will suit you if you wish to gain knowledge, understanding and the skills for working in sport and leisure in a variety of different roles.
What will I learn? The course covers all the different aspects for working in the sport, leisure and fitness industry and includes some of the following modules:
- Working in sport and leisure
- Delivering sport and leisure activities
- Fitness training and programming
- Safe learning in the workplace
- Job opportunities in sport and leisure
- How the body works
What else will I gain?
Throughout this practically based course you will take part in several trips and visits aimed at increasing your understanding of the range of job roles and opportunities within the sport and active leisure industry. In addition, you will complete a residential experience and community action project as part of a National Citizenship programme. This will help you to gain a range of skills and experiences that will support your career progression.

Our excellent sports facilities consist of a fully equipped Health & Fitness Centre, Multi-court Sports Hall and Outdoor 3G pitches. You will learn from highly qualified, expert staff with a range of academic and industry specific backgrounds. Students also benefit from our strong connections to the city's amateur and professional sports clubs and sporting organisations. There are also opportunities to take part in a range of sports both recreationally and competitively.
Where will it lead?
On successful completion of your course you can progress onto a traineeship, an apprenticeship or consider a full time Level 2 Sport course.
3 GCSE grade 2/E (or acceptable alternatives) including a minimum grade 2 in English language.
Sport BTEC level 1 is assessed mostly by course work and practical assessments however there may also be some exams.
At The Sheffield College we will always do our best to support you through your studies, to make them as stress free as possible. We have a specialist support team who can give you all the advice you need on all things financial, including what might be available to you, so that you don’t go short and you can concentrate all your efforts into your studies.
If you meet the eligibility criteria we’ll be able to support you with free meals. You’ll get an amount of money that you can use within the college shops and diners per day. This will be added to your student ID card which you will just swipe to purchase items.
Students (including Apprentices) of The Sheffield College who live in South Yorkshire are eligible for a 16–18 Student Pass which entitles pass holders to cheaper travel on buses and trams in South Yorkshire. Pass holders are also entitled to half fare on Northern train services in South Yorkshire.

Where can it lead?
Successful completion of this course with good attendance, punctuality and tutor recommendation could lead to one of our sport full time level 2 courses or our sport apprenticeship programme or other appropriate course.
