Children's Play, Learning and Development BTEC Level 3 Extended Certificate at William Howard School
If you are someone who is interested in working in early years, this is an excellent course.
BTEC is a vocationally related qualification, where you develop knowledge and understanding by applying your learning and skills in a work-related context.
Additionally, it allows you to develop skills that are essential for the modern-day workplace. These skills include: team working; working from a prescribed brief; working to deadlines; and presenting information effectively.
Unit 1: Child Development (exam)
Unit 2: Development of Children’s Communication, Literacy and Numeracy Skills (externally assessed set task)
Unit 3: Play and Learning (coursework)

Unit 5: Keeping Children Safe
Unit 6: Meeting Children’s Physical Development, Physical Care and Health Needs
Unit 8: Working with parents and others in early years.
Unit 11: The Early Years Foundation Stage.
This is a two year course so you must commit to study in both Y12 and Y13. There is some internally assessed work in the form of assignments.
You will be required to produce a portfolio of evidence based on 50 hours of work experience. One unit in Year 12 is externally assessed in the form of a written examination and one in Year 13 in the form of a set assignment under examination conditions.
Grades awarded are Pass, Merit, Distinction, Distinction* or Unclassified. You must pass all units including the exam to achieve an overall grade.
These qualifications provide opportunities for you to progress to either a higher academic qualification at university or more specialised vocational pathways, and support progression into employment such as apprenticeships or a job in childcare.
