Hospitality and Catering Level 2 at Lowestoft College

Course description

An Apprenticeship is a work-based learning programme for people aged 16 and over. The programme combines training in the workplace and college with the emphasis on ‘learning whilst working’. Each programme follows a nationally recognised framework which explains what has to be achieved to become qualified in your chosen career. Whilst on the programme, you will be working towards an NVQ (National Vocational Qualification), Functional Skills and a Technical Certificate.

Course content

The Catering and Hospitality framework has been designed by People 1st, the sector led organisation. 

Hospitality and Catering Apprenticeships are available at NVQ Level 2 in the following areas:

  • Professional cookery
  • Food and beverage service
  • Food service
  • Drink service

Apprentices will work towards units in:

  • Health and safety
  • Working effectively as a team
  • Maintaining food safety

The optional units for the NVQs can be negotiated with your assessor to best suit the employer.

Units for the technical certificate will cover a range of units that meets the needs of the sector.

Vacancies
We have a number of local businesses looking for an apprentice. If you are interested in a career in the hospitality industry we have vacancies in pubs, care homes, schools and restaurants.

Entry requirements

To start an Apprenticeship you have to be employed in the Catering industry. 

Apprentices will be required to have a good general standard of education with an enthusiastic approach to the trade and a determination to succeed. It is recommended that you will have GCSEs in maths and English. 

The decision to allow you to start the Apprenticeship will be based on your employment status, prior accreditation, the outcome of an interview and assessment results. 

Your employer will be assessed on their ability to offer the variety of work necessary to allow you to complete the Apprenticeship as well as a Health and Safety Assessment.

Assessment

This will be on-site assessment and practical college assessments. There will also be written exams at the end of each year. You will also be required to compile a portfolio of evidence which will include assessment by:

  • Observation
  • Witness statements
  • Product evidence
  • Photographs
  • Evidencing of theory knowledge

Future opportunities

The Apprenticeship will give you a full NVQ, the Technical Certificate, Personal Learning and Thinking Skills, Functional English and maths.

Progression on to either the Level 3 Hospitality Supervision and Leadership or Level 3 Professional Cookery Qualification.
