A2 Level Fine Art at The Rugeley Sixth Form Academy

Course description

The AS/A2 course is an intensive but exciting course intended not only to develop your technical competence but also aims to encourage you to experiment with ideas and materials in a systematic way. Work in a variety of materials is encouraged, supported by gallery visits inside and outside school hours. The course is not intended to be solely vocational (although if you have career aspirations in Art and Design you will be given every encouragement) but is for any student who has a practical interest in visual communication and who is capable of working independently to produce a personal response to a given theme. Skills and Attributes that students need to be successful: An ideal Art student is one who: • has achieved well and enjoyed Art at GCSE • is enthusiastic hardworking and motivated and can work independently • wishes to further their Art skills • enjoys a more practical based subject How the course is assessed: All units are marked by the Art staff and moderated by the examining board. Students are marked on drawing ability, links and understanding of other artist’s work, their use of media, and their own personal ideas and ability to make a creative decision. What students do after completion: The combination of subjects you choose, i.e. whether you choose to study one Art and Design subjects with other subjects at A-level or would rather combine several Art and Design subjects will, influence the progression opportunities available to you. You must consider your ability to manage the volume of coursework involved in studying an Art and Design subject when making your choice. Students taking this course have: • taken Art Foundation and HND courses • applied to specialised degrees in Art, Craft or Design • used the points to apply to UCAS • gone into the world of work

Entry requirements

It is expected that if you wish to pursue the A-level course you will have demonstrated sound technical ability in observational work at GCSE or its equivalent, together with some flair for expressing ideas in an imaginative way. To take this course students should fulfil the general entry requirements to study A-levels at the Centre and: o ideally have a B or above in GCSE Art o a portfolio or examples of Art and Design work o an enthusiasm and commitment for Art and its many areas of study o an ability to communicate ideas effectively o a willingness to try something new Applications will be considered from students who have not previously studied Art & Design at GCSE, subject to a review of their sketchbooks and existing work. In addition they will be expected to work even harder to catch up to the level required at AS/A2 level.

Future opportunities

You could take this course with other advanced level courses such as History of Art to prepare for higher education in areas of art and design, photography, architecture or more general higher education courses. With further training, you could go into a job related to art and design such as an Architect, Interior or Fashion Designer. The course will also encourage you to explore your creative mind and help you develop the basic skills, understanding and knowledge that many employers across lots of industries are looking for.
