Physical Education at Derby High School

Course description

It is not a requirement that you should have studied Physical Education at GCSE level in order to take an Advanced Subsidiary or Advanced GCE course in this subject. However several topics covered in the course are developments of work covered at GCSE but others are new. What is important is that you should have a very good level of performance, a lively and enquiring mind, a strong interest in physical education, an aptitude in scientific principles, a willingness to explore new ideas and an ability to communicate your ideas effectively. If you enjoy sporting activities the course will broaden your all round knowledge of Physical Education. At the same time it will develop your understanding of the theory behind the subject in ways that you can relate to and ultimately create a life plan linked to sport participation and health. The course is predominantly theoretical but the development of practical experiences is included. . What will I learn on this Advanced GCE course?You will:*Investigate what constitutes a healthy and active lifestyle*Consider how competitive sport has developed over time*Develop your practical experiences*Conduct independent research into the structure, provision and analysis of sport and physical activity*Develop a knowledge of understanding of the short and long term physiological and psychological preparations made by elite athletes*Construct a development plan to further your performance as a player, leader or official.

Entry requirements

Seven full GCSE passes (including English and Maths) at Grade B or above with at least a B in those subjects that the student wishes to study.
